December 6, 2019
Anti FGM practise youth group
In 2017, The Restorers as they have named themselves are a group of Kenyan students who developed a mobile phone app aiming to help victims or potential victims of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
The Restorers include teenage students including Stacy Owino, Cynthia Otieno, Purity Achieng, Mascrine Atieno and Ivy Akinyi who say its their mission to restore hope to hopeless girls.
Restorers have been widely appreciated for their genius work, according to them the creation of the app is a hope that it can allow girls to decide their own destinies.
The app is called i-Cut and its interface has five different buttons with different options including
- Information on FGM,
- Donate and Feedback
The i-Cut app is designed to connect both potential victims and the FGM affected girls to legal and medical assistance. Further more it should allow girls and young women who are at risk of genital mutilation to get help very quickly.
I-Cut’s first three options provide the possibility for seeking help and immediate assistance, as well as finding/ locating any available rescue center or reporting the procedure to the state authorities in countries where FGM is now illegal.
World Health Organization, three million young girls worldwide are at risk each year. Currently, 200 million girls and women worldwide have to live with the terrible consequences of their genital mutilation.
FGM is a global problem facing scores of girls and women in Africa, Asia and the Middle East where it is particularly widespread, yet countless girls are still at risk each year in the west including Australia, EU etc.
An alarming trend is emerging in many countries where despite being banned, the practice continues, is that genital mutilation is now also being “medicalized” and thereby medical care providers have started to provide surgical procedure to circumcise girls.
This trend is criticized for its legitimizes the inhumane and barbaric practice of FGM and creates the distorted impression among communities that genital mutilation would no longer entail health risks, even though this is not true.
