This feature documentary profiles a bustling Indian shantytown where 40,000 people live and work in the most primitive conditions.

Translated from Dutch NOS TV today:

The Dutch company SBM Offshore had a seriously polluting gas tanker demolished on a beach in India last year, even though the corporation had been warned of fatal health risks. According to research by the television program Zembla, which has a broadcast about it tonight at NPO 2 TV.

The poisonous tanker contained very high concentrations of mercury. A specialist agency warned the Dutch platform builder that mercury vapours could be released during the demolition. This could lead to permanent neurological damage or death for employees. But SBM, Zembla reports, tried to conceal the amount of mercury in order to save money on cleaning costs. Employees were hardly protected.
