Now a new study suggests that the so-called ‘love hormone’ oxytocin – which promotes bonding between people and animals – uses a cannabis-like chemical to make us feel sociable.
When we socialise, anandamide – also known as the ‘bliss molecule’ – is released, in a chemical reaction which affects the brain’s cannabinoid system.
The finding, by University of California, Irvine, researchers, offers a new insight into how the ‘love hormone’ works – and could offer new treatments for autism.
