How long will Brendan Rodgers be given to turn things round at Liverpool? (Picture: AP)
#AceSportsNews – Sept.29: You could feel it in the air that Saturday’s game with Aston Villa was massive for Liverpool – and possibly the make or break of Brendan Rodgers’ Reds career.
After James Milner netted within a couple of minutes, those nerves and apprehension died down slightly, although Liverpool’s defence was still not up to scratch.
Somewhat like the 2013/14 season, it really was a case of Liverpool making up for their defensive faults by scoring a hat full of goals. Of course, without Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge has now lost his partner in crime.
Instead, Sturridge was accompanied by Danny Ings, who has impressed in his first few appearances for the Reds in terms of work-rate and finishing. Fans had been calling for two strikers to make the starting line-up, after frustration watching a solo forward being isolated and struggling to make an impact.
Sturridge was back with a bang – simple and composed finishing, exactly what the Liverpool fans have been wanting to see for months in his absence.
But what next for Rodgers? The team may have found that win to temporarily steady the ship, but for the long-term, where do they go from here?
There are so many differing opinions about the current situation at Liverpool, a TV pundit sensibly claimed this week that fans don’t actually know what the best step in the right direction would be.
The owners have backed Rodgers since he has been in the job, and so he has had the funds to express the direction in which he wants the team to go in.
A change in manager isn’t an easy step, and we’ve seen what Rodgers can do with a side in his time here, even if that was with Suarez leading the line – and so early in the season, a change in manager is a reaction that is often turned to too easily.
Now that Sturridge is back in the team, Liverpool can start looking forward to playing positively, and be confident in having that main man up front who can fire the goals home.
With two managers potentially waiting in the wings, the pressure is still on Rodgers and the team to deliver – but there is still time to turn it around, and the first step was made on Saturday. The all-important question is whether we can string a set of results together?
